Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who set out on a voyage in 1519 with the goal of circumnavigating the world. He was the first explorer to do so, and his expedition was a great success, although Magellan himself did not live to see the completion of the voyage. He was killed in the Philippines in 1521, but his crew completed the journey and returned to Spain in 1522. Magellan's legacy lives on today, and his name is immortalized in the July 20, 2023 New York Times crossword clue "Like Magellan in 1519."
