This beach was the site of the largest amphibious invasion in history, with over 156,000 Allied troops landing on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. Utah Beach was the location of the U.S. 4th Infantry Division's landing and was the westernmost beach of the five beaches that were assaulted during the D-Day invasion. The beach was also the site of the first American casualty of the invasion, Pvt. John R. Steele, who was killed in action on June 7, 1944.
